Your Guide to Garden Edging Stones

How can I make my garden borders and paths look really good?

If you want to create beautifully defined flower beds, garden borders, and pathways in your garden, then garden edging stones are an essential part of enhancing the design of your outdoor spaces.

Well designed garden edges personalise your garden space, and they keep your flower beds and garden pathways looking well maintained and orderly with minimal effort.

How do you design garden edges?

Creating garden edges with stone or other edging material at home is easy but labour intensive or time-consuming, depending on your desired garden and pathway edging method and your design.

Follow our four steps for keeping your lawns and beds looking neat with clean, smooth lines to provide a finished look to your outside area.

Steps for designing garden edges:

Step 1: Make (or re-create) an edge

First, cut the edge. To create a new flower bed, use a garden hose to mark your preferred lines. We recommend a spade or half-moon edger to help you define the lines you’ve marked out.

Step 2: Remove the turf on your edging

Once you’ve established an edge, define it with a spade and deepen the cut to 10 to 15 cm. Once loosened, you can remove the turf easily by hand. Remember, the goal is to create an edge at a 90-degree angle.

Step 3: Hone your edges

For a razor-sharp edge, place hand shears vertically along the wall of your trench and cut any remaining grass blades from the edge. You may want to repeat this process a few times to keep your edges neat and groomed.

Step 4: Add mulch to your beds

Finally, lay down 5 to 8 cm of mulch on your bed. The mulch will suppress weeds, add nutrients back into the soil and give the edge of your garden beds a rich, dark colour.

  • Paver Stones
  • Flagstone
  • Shovel Edging

What is the best edging for gardens?

At Midland Sand & Soil, we believe garden stones are the best edging for gardens of all sizes. Stone garden edging provides good drainage and is an excellent solution for lower-lying, waterlogged gardens.

When looking at lawn and garden edging options, make sure you take the time to explore the fantastic variety of stone sizes, shapes and materials for your ideal landscape border.

Types of stones you can use:

As a type of sandstone/flagstone, Moss rocks provide a natural look with lush green textured moss growth on rugged brownish-red rocks.

Choose smooth, polished pebbles of different sizes and colours to create decorative stone edging for gardens for a cleaner, more polished look.

At Midland Sand & Soil, we stock the following polished pebbles, and if you buy nine bags, you get the tenth bag free:

  • Off White Polished Pebbles
  • Black Polished Pebbles
  • Red Polished Pebbles

Summerstone offers wonderful texture and is a premium decorative stone commonly used for commercial landscaping, garden beds, fence lines, and water features.

Use Rainbow stones to introduce more colour and texture to natural stone garden edging. These stones are decorative, colourful, and an excellent alternative to traditional mulch.

Consider using pavers in between garden stones

Pavers are concrete and nearly indestructible. You can make eye-catching paths with pavers and garden stones. Or, you can use paver garden edging for attractive and long-lasting edges for flower beds and pathways because pavers last forever.

We recommend you plan your paver garden edging before getting started because they are heavy to handle and time-consuming to install, but the results will be worth it.
