Woodland Red Woodchip

Mulch is more than the cherry on top of your garden bed. Despite how good it looks, its good looks aren’t its only purpose. Mulch is essential for any home gardener to have in their arsenal.

What are the benefits of mulch?

  • Retains soil moisture
  • Controls weeds
  • Slows down rain runoff
  • Insulates your soil to reduce winter plant injury
  • Adds essential nutrients as it breaks down over time

What type of mulch you need for your garden bed depends on your personal preference. But we are surprised how many of our customers hadn’t considered red woodchip as an option. We are going to run you through exactly why we think red woodchip should be your mulch of choice next time you visit your local garden supply store.

Why use red woodchip mulch:

Appearance

This decorative mulch adds a pop of colour to your garden beds. It is used a lot in formal gardens as it is perfect for drawing focus to features and pathways.

Non-toxic

Red woodchip is a dyed mulch to achieve vibrant red, but the colour stain is non-toxic. It’s perfect around children, pets and plants. The colourants used are highly resistant to UV rays even in the harshest Australian climate. You don’t have to worry about this vibrant red fading or washing away. Did we mention it has a pleasant smell too?

Organic

Red woodchip is part of the organic mulch family. Red woodchip has rot-resistant qualities to preserve your garden throughout all the seasons. It is also a natural insect repeller and is the best choice if your outdoor space is prone to termites or ant infestations.

Lifetime

Red woodchip will last longer than other wood chips for your garden as it replicates the natural mulching decomposition of its native woodland environment.

Cons of red woodchip mulch

If the red woodchip mulch has been improperly handled, it can produce a toxic substance. This can happen if your supplier hasn’t let the woodchip get enough oxygen. To avoid this, simply smell the red woodchip before you buy it.

If it has a foul odour, opt for another product. Alternatively, lay the garden wood mulch out on a concrete surface. Leave it to air out for a few days before spreading it on your garden.

As the redwood chip is an organic mulch, it will need to be replaced every three to four years due to its breakdown cycle. We don’t consider this a negative due to the wealth of benefits organic mulch has for your garden; it’s more of a heads up!

Our final tip when purchasing red woodchip mulch is to ensure the quality of the product. Unfortunately, some landscape suppliers stain scrap wood to resemble red woodchips. This type of woodchip is the leftovers from industrial use. It may contain chemicals and harmful substances for your garden ecosystem.

Ensure your product is legitimate by only purchasing mulch labelled as red woodchip mulch. Your garden will love you for it!
